Food For The Brain, Research Driven Healthy Cook Book

Everyone has got a busy lifestyle, lets don't forget about health. There are health and cook books targeted at weight management, increasing stamina and fitness, and even eating for your blood type, but have you considered eating for brain health?

Our brain is among our most important organs, the seat of cognitive function, memory and learning. However, the brain as with all organs is also susceptible to degenerative disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, forms of dementia including Alzheimer's disease. These disorders are most frequently linked to ageing.
Professor Shirasawa  from the Department of Ageing Control Medicine, Dokkyo Medical University with newly launched "Food For The Brain”, a health and recipe book to promote brain health in reducing effects of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease.

In 2015, there were 2.8 million senior citizens (aged 60 and above) or 9 per cent out of Malaysia’s 31 million population. By the year 2050, it is expected that Malaysia will have 40.7 million citizens with 23.5% of the population being senior citizen. Currently, 1.4 out 10 Malaysian adults aged 60 and above suffer from dementia. The incidence of dementia rises to 22.7% among those 75 years and above.

Healthy fats, including those found in local favorites coconut and fatty fish, may be the delicious and simple solution that can help to extend brain function for more years.

Enter Food for the Brain, a research-driven healthy cook book by Japanese anti-ageing specialist Professor Takuji Shirasawa that forwards the case for feeding your brain with the healthy fats from coconut and fatty fish to reduce degenerative effects for longer.

Professor Shirasawa is a prolific author in Japan with more than 230 books published for both the general public and the scientific community. His anti-ageing books have sold more than 3 million copies in Japan.

Food for the Brain has been written specifically for readers in Malaysia and Singapore, with recipes created to suit local tastes. It is available in English and Mandarin, with a Bahasa Malaysia version expected soon.

Printed in large type for easy reading even for older readers, with clear explanations for all ages, Food for the Brain highlights the role of Omega 3 fatty acids and MCTs in reducing the risk of dementia, diabetes, stroke and excessive weight gain. It features beautifully styled and photographed food, that will whet every appetite. Click here to know about the Professor.

Start today feeding your brain’s future with Food For The Brain healthy cook book

The first half of the book focuses on the research into the effects of Medium Chain Triglycerides and Omega 3 that have been proven to help reduce the effects of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia with daily intake. The research has been presented in simple, easy to understand language.

It is important to note that these healthy fats are not a cure for those with degenerative brain diseases, but they have been shown in laboratory settings, and in small group usage to lessen some of the effects of degenerative brain diseases, and improve overall health; and to delay the onset of these diseases.

The second half of Food for the Brain showcase the recipes that were developed through a collaborative effort between experts across anti-ageing, nutrition, food styling and photography; Professor Shirasawa, Ms Daniela Shiga, Cooperating Researcher with Juntendo University Graduate School of Medicine, MyKenzen, a renowned nutrition service consulting company, Pelita Lim, a prominent food stylist in South-East Asia and Keat Song, an accomplished photographer.

These experts ensured that the recipes in this book were developed with local taste preferences and available ingredients in mind, analysed for high content of Omega 3 and MCT, tested for ease of preparation, tasted for deliciousness and proven in terms of nutritional values.

Each recipe comes with a beautifully styled and photographed image of the completed dish or beverage. The facing page details the ingredients, method of preparation, number of servings, nutritional analysis of calories, tips from Daniella on the additional benefits of ingredients, and the amount of MCT or Omega 3 present in the dish.

The recipe section is divided into food and drinks for different occasions – Breakfast, On the Go and Snacks, Main Meals and Sides as well as Drinks and Dessert, for quick reference.

“Maintaining good brain function, and overall good health for longer is very important as it will determine how the golden years are spent. If we start early with the right diet, we can look forward to a more active, productive and happier life after 60 with reduced risk of degenerative brain diseases. The traditional Malaysian diet that was rich in coconut and fatty fish such as sardines and tuna was better for brain health, than the more processed ‘fast foods’ that are the norm now,” said Professor Shirasawa.

“It is never too early to begin eating for health, in fact we should be eating for health from childhood. With this book, my first for Malaysia, we have shared the science, and brought readers recipes that will let them experience the point where healthy for the brain and delicious meet,” he added.

Everyone can benefit from the research, recipes and recommendations in Food for the Brain, from senior citizens and their caregivers, to younger people aiming to make a positive change in their longer term health. Even cooks and chefs will find these recipes a useful addition for natural, healthy, coconut and fatty fish based recipes which can be made with ease and flair.

Among the dishes are Chia Seed Porridge, Coconut Pancake, Mackerel Curry, Mum’s Sardines, Parmesan Crusted Tuna Rice Balls, Tuna & Sardine Wrap, Coconut Milk Ice Cream and Mango Coconut Smoothie.

What's for lunch?

Here's my fast lunch as I didn't want to go out, my son is at tuition centre while my 4 yrs old is having his nap.

Mamee has once again added its own touch to a Malaysian favourite - this time with the new Mamee Chef Lontong, its latest co-creation with Dato' Chef Ismail.

I added meat balls in the soup, each pack of Mamee Chef Lontong comes with additional condiments such as chilies and vegetables for more authentic experience.

Traditionally, lontong is a dish made of compressed rice wrapped inside a banana leaf and is popularly eaten during the festive season. There are various regional styles of preparing lontong, but for many Malaysians, eating lontong means having the compressed rice chunks dunked in a rich and flavoursome coconut-based soup.

The soupy style of eating lontong is the inspiration for Mamee Chef Lontong, although few would expect lontong to come in the form of an instant noodle cake. The paste gives the dish an authentic flavour, which makes Mamee Chef Lontong taste as close to the real dish as possible.

Mamee Chef recently appointed popular Malaysian actress and celebrity Nora Danish as its Brand Ambassador. Nora clicks perfectly with the Mamee Chef brand and was chosen for her intelligence, confidence, lifestyle consciousness and her hectic schedule – being a busy professional and mother of a young child.

Recently I watched a movie acted by Nora Danish, Suamiku Jatuh Dari Langit it's a comedy movie. I wrote a blog review on this movie, click on the link to read more about it.
Photo above credit to Facebook Mamee Chef, they are having a contest check them for more info.

Mamee Chef, a premium range from homegrown Malaysian instant noodle brand Mamee was first launched in late 2012 and has since then set a new standard for instant noodles. Three of its flavours - Thai Tom Yam, Curry Laksa and Spicy Chicken Shiitake as well as Gold Recipe variants Mi Kari Seribu Rasa and Bihun Kari Seribu Rasa were developed with Dato’ Chef Ismail, the official Co-Creator for the Mamee Chef range.

Mamee Chef is one of the first instant noodles in Malaysia to use the La Mian production technology. The La Mian method, also known as the pulled noodles technique, originated from China during the 15th century and creates noodles that stay springy for longer and don’t get soggy easily. Mamee has perfected the texture and taste of the noodle cake, as well as invested in machines to ensure that the pulled noodles for the Mamee Chef range are produced efficiently without compromising on quality.

The Mamee manufacturing facilities, which are located in 3 locations in Malaysia and one each in Myanmar and Indonesia, are all certified under ISO:9001, ISO:22000 and HACCP, and have halal certification. In Malaysia, Mamee has halalan toyibban certification from JAKIM for adhering to the industry best practices in maintaining the highest standards of quality and hygiene in food production.

Travel with kids

I need to prepare on snacks and tibits for my kids if I need to bring them for travel. This weekend we are heading to Zoo and my son very excited because his birthday we promised to bring him go but his little brother was sick so we didn't go.

Now we have chance to go and he's going to be excited about it. I told him, he needs to do well in Spelling because the Chinese Language has the zoo words. But it seems he still didn't write correctly! Anyway I didn't blame him, he must have hard time to remember the strokes for spelling.

Travel with kids not just about snacks but also bring along toys if you can! Talking of travel don't forget to stock up your sunscreen, I did that's why I am having a red handbag organizer giveaway. Click on the link to find out.

Who needs a makeover?

Do you know anyone who needs a makeover? There is chance to win a makeover just head to the blog now.

My son kept telling me he wants to go Legoland, his classmates been to Legoland. He told me where his classmate been to during the school holiday, some of them went Hong Kong.

I would bring him to go holiday or vacation but income is not enough, I cannot do it. I am stay at home mom of two boys. I wanted to get a job but I find that nobody is able to guide my son to do his home work and study and reading. Even though we can hire tuition teacher but it is costly! The income is not enough for us to go further.

Sadly some people thinking that if you are living in a decent city means you are living in wealth! That's crazy, many people living in the city, some rented the room and house to go for work. It is worst when the house got nobody when everyone is out at work and thieves came to rob you!

Anyway I am glad to see friends having good time and great time on vacation/holiday with their loved ones. I am happy too because I get to go movie with my dear.

Planning a vacation

I am planning on a domestic vacation. I think it would be Malacca because there are some places that I have not been to namely the Jonker Street. I passed by the Jonker Street the other day in the car and there is no parking at all, there is a long jam along the road.

What else I would do in Malacca is look for food, I love rice ball chicken and nyonya food. The last trip with family to Malacca was many years ago. When I see the picture of us taken at Malacca I know it is time to go back Malacca for a nice vacation.

I think we may consider staying at Seri Costa Malacca. Where do you suggest if we need family room that can have two children accommodate as well.

Zoo Negara

The picture taken long time ago, but now only I get to share with you. It is taken at Zoo Negara, now there is lack of animal at the zoo. When I was a kid I remember there is horse but now I don't see any horse there.

I remember having a picture of me with the horse. My dad snaps the picture too fast and left out my head in the picture. It is funny that time the camera is not like now we can delete the picture. We were using the film camera back then, now we have the digital camera.

Are we going for a holiday?

My relatives have the plan to go on holiday and it is a group of people. I am happy to see that I am going along but I hope there are no changes at all. I also ask dad to go along as he heard the conversation of going for holiday. But it seems he needs be back home the next day, that is kind of difficult because nobody is going the same way, those people that going same way the car is full.

We are still in the mist of planning, wish us luck. Everyone needs a good rest, good to know some relatives are pregnant too. Go as family is fun, it is first time going with big family. So now you know how important it is to have the car to travel from one place to another.

Variety of food in Malaysia

Living in Malaysia you can never find yourself hungry as most stalls and restaurant are open at night. You can still continue eat after having dinner, having supper is common in Malaysia. I am always hungry so I don't want to over eat as I have put up a lot of weight.

If you let me choose to shop or dine, I will say dine as you need to eat to do many things. If you don't eat do you think you have good eye to shop?

Just few days ago I eat nasi lemak and I also had a burger last night.

Crocodile farm in Malaysia

If you like to see crocodile, I would suggest to go Kuching, Sarawak. If you like to know the room rates have a look at this hotels for all. The list might not be the latest but at least you know sort of how much the room charges cost.

You do not need to hire a car with driver if you are travel with small group. You can just hire the taxi at the hotel as it is much cheaper. I remember reach Kuching airport to purchase MYR$20 ticket for the ride from airport to hotel. You need to ask them where is the taxi parking as outside the airport there are some not belong to the airport.

If you like to stay away from the city check out Kuching Park Hotel.

Personally I have not been there but I will give a try if I am going to visit Malacca this year. Good news for folks that looking for internet access because this Seven Hotel provided them. I am not sure of the fees but you can check at their reception.

If there is a choice to call them or email them, I would choose to call them and ask.
